Welcome to Year 5!
We hope you find this page useful for finding out information about your child's education.
It may not be the usual start to the school year however, we will be spending the first 2 full weeks with your child's previous teacher to support our Recovery Curriculum as a school. There will be some transition afternoons throughout the next few weeks and then from Monday September 21st, the children will be starting the NEW school year with their NEW teacher.
Although this is not the usual start to a school year, we hope that you, and they, will find it useful to help us all settle back into routine and 'normality'.
On Tuesdays, your child will be asked to come to school dressed in their PE kit. Please ensure that PE clothing is appropriate to the weather conditions as we will be heading outside in the fresh air as much as possible in the coming weeks.
Home Learning in Year 5
Reading takes priority over all home learning. We expect the children to read aloud to you on a daily basis for 10-15 minutes to:
* develop their fluency
* give you the opportunity to explain the meaning of new words
* to check their understanding by asking them questions.
We strongly recommend that you read to your child as much as possible - preferably a more challenging book that they would not necessarily choose or be able to read themselves to. When your child completes a book, they will take a quiz on our Accelerated Reader platform in school to test their knowledge and understanding of what they have read. They can use the website www.myon.co.uk to read books online - these books are linked to their Book Level (ZPD).
During the term, the children will have the opportunity to become a Reading Champion. They will be awarded a certificate for every 10 books they read. They can also take the 'Great Year 5 Reading Challenge' by reading some of our recommended reads which are on display in our classrooms.
From the 21st September, the children will receive their Autumn Term Home Learning Grid. These tasks will cover a broad range of tasks covering a number of subjects. The children will choose home learning tasks to complete before each half term and bring these into school the Thursday before half term - October 22nd.
We will continue to introduce a new spelling rule is every Monday in school and practice it throughout the week. This term, we will be setting all spellings through Spelling Shed as well as sending a sheet for further practise.
Children should also continue to use Times Table Rockstars and My Maths to consolidate their mathematical understanding.
Some of fabulous learning last year!
