5RL's Class Assembly
Louis Pasteur
5AC retold the life of Louis Pasteur in their recent class assembly.
Louis Pasteur helped people to understand how diseases spread and introduced pasteurisation to kill off harmful bacteria in drinks such as: milk, wine and beer.
Due to his hard work and important discoveries, we are able to vaccinate ourselves against harmful diseases and live a much healthier, happier life.
British Science Week 2019
Using our own hand-made musical instruments, we investigated how different sounds are made. We really enjoyed experimenting with altering the pitch of our instruments!

Safer Intenet Day 2019
Year 5 enjoyed discussing important online issues around 'consent' and 'permission' when using the internet. They all pledged to be safe and considerate online explorers.
You can find other useful resources on internet safety below.
James Campbell author visit
Recently, we were incredibly lucky to have a visit from James Campbell, the children's author of the 'Boy Face' books and 'The Funny Life of Pets'.
We all enjoyed hearing about the inspiration behind his stories and how his notes eventually turn into a book. Lots of our children have been inspired to write a story of their own and a few of our children even inspired James himself! We look forward to seeing whether our stories end up in one of his future books.
In gymnastics, we have been learning how to improve our flexibility and core strength. We have been performing routines that include various point and patch balances. The children have noticed lots of improvement and are very proud with how their balances have developed throughout the unit.
Year 5 are keeping fit and healthy!
Outdoor games is something that the children really look forward to each week. So far this term, the children have participated in hockey and indoor rowing. They have also looked at how they can improve their fitness and strength. The children really enjoyed challenging each other and they have all improved their times and scores; well done Year 5!
We are geographers!
Year 5 enjoyed a fascinating trip to Moorcroft Quarry to see how the limestone is extracted and processed. The children couldn't believe the size of this quarry which is right on their doorstep.
We are scientists!
The children have been investigating materials and their properties. Recently, they have looked at soluble and insoluble materials. They have also explored irreversible and reversible changes. We have worked together to design and conduct fair tests; we have all had lots of fun doing this.
The Year 5 Residential
Monday 29th April 2019 - Friday 3rd May 2019
Barton Hall - PGL.
The children all had a fantastic time. They were a credit to the school and all embraced the challenges that they were faced with. It was great to see their growth in independence and confidence throughout the week.
Homework in Year 5
Maths and English tasks are set every Friday and are linked to our learning that week. The tasks need to be handed in on the following Thursday.
Spellings are set on a Monday and tested on a Friday. The children will have a spelling focus every week and they will practise in school every day. Please support the children at home by checking their A4 red spelling book and testing them on the focus area for that week.
Reading to as well as hearing your child on a daily basis is invaluable not only helping their fluency but to improve their understanding and to expand their vocabulary. We recommend a minimum of 15 minutes five times a week - see the reading links below for further details.
