Strong Foundations. Wide Horizons. Confident Futures.

At Elburton, our curriculum begins with a simple belief: children need powerful knowledge to understand the world and the confidence and skills to participate in it.

From Pre-School to Year 6, learning is carefully sequenced so that children develop secure knowledge, understanding and vocabulary over time. New learning is deliberately connected to what children already know, helping children make sense of increasingly complex ideas and concepts.

Important knowledge is revisited, practised and applied so that it becomes secure and lasting. As children progress through the school, they learn not only to know more, but to think more deeply within each subject.

Our curriculum combines:

  • Strong foundational knowledge
  • Excellent reading, writing, mathematics and oracy
  • Carefully sequenced subject knowledge
  • Purposeful opportunities to think, question and explain
  • Experiences that broaden children's horizons
  • Meaningful connections between learning and the wider world
  • Opportunities to create, collaborate, lead and contribute

Our teaching is informed by evidence about how children learn. We use approaches such as explicit instruction, modelling, retrieval practice, deliberate practice and carefully structured lessons to help children succeed.

However, knowing more is not the end point.

We want children to use what they know: to reason, communicate, solve problems, make connections and develop thoughtful responses to the world around them.

Our Wider Curriculum

Alongside strong academic foundations, we deliberately create opportunities for children to develop confidence, communication, independence, resilience and curiosity.

We want children to discover talents, interests and possibilities that extend beyond the classroom and contribute to their personal development.

Elburton Learning

Building Powerful Knowledge

Children develop secure foundations and increasingly sophisticated knowledge across the curriculum.

We carefully sequence learning, explicitly teach vocabulary, revisit important concepts and help children connect new knowledge with what they already understand. This enables pupils to remember more, understand more and apply their learning with increasing confidence.

Elburton Voice

Giving Children the Confidence to Communicate

Speaking and listening are fundamental to learning.

Children learn how to explain, question, discuss, debate, present and listen thoughtfully to others. Through every subject, they develop the confidence to communicate ideas clearly, justify opinions and engage respectfully with different viewpoints.

We want every Elburton child to leave us with a voice and the confidence to use it.

Looking Ahead

Broadening Horizons. Building Confidence. Opening Possibilities.

We are continuing to strengthen the wider experiences we offer our children so that learning reaches beyond the classroom.

Our next stage of curriculum development is to create a more clearly defined entitlement to experiences that broaden horizons, introduce new interests and help every child discover possibilities they may not otherwise encounter.

This work will build on the many opportunities already available at Elburton and ensure that every child benefits from a rich, memorable and ambitious primary education.
